In February of 1966, the Fraternity was planning a Roaring 20's theme party weekend with the upstairs of the house decorated like a funeral parlor and the downstairs like a speakeasy. We needed a casket to add some authenticity, so the local Blacksburg funeral home lent us their floral delivery truck to pick up one of their caskets about 70 miles away in Marion, Virginia. We must have been drinking a few beers as we drove down a recently opened portion of I-81 because Tom Strickler asked John Oberholtzer, the driver, to stop for him to go to the bathroom. John replied, "just hold it". When Tom got tired of holding it, he opened the back door of the van and relieved himself out the back of our vehicle going 60 MPH. Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know what happens when you do that. We were immediately bombarded by tiny little droplets that we now affectionately refer to as being baptized by Tom. Tom remembers everyone waving their arms around swatting the mist. After we got the casket, we made our Pledge, Tim Wachenfeld, ride inside it (there weren’t any seat belts in the truck, so it didn't really matter where you were riding). We stopped for gas and asked the station attendant if he wanted to look inside the casket. When he did, Tim sat up and scared the devil out of the poor guy. Remembering stuff like this now puts a big smile on my face!

While helping Steve Brisbane review the photos that have been posted on the web site, I found another photo of the infamous Casket trip in the old scrapbooks that Davis Hodsden recently retrieved from the Fraternity house attic. This photograph includes Tim and looks as though he is our prisoner. Tim is probably saying, "Oh Boy, I can’t wait to ride in that casket with these crazy guys”. Forty eight years later, it's a riot, right Tim?
